Driver Authorization Letter Explained: Cost, Validity, and Online Process

Driver Authorization Letter is an official document that allows someone other than the registered vehicle owner to legally drive a bike or car. This letter becomes extremely important when the vehicle owner and the driver are two different people.

Real-Life Example

Suppose:

  • The vehicle owner’s name is Amal Roy

  • The vehicle is being driven by his son Swapan Roy

If traffic police stop the vehicle and find that the driver’s name does not match the vehicle owner’s name, the driver may face heavy fines. In some cases, the vehicle may even be seized.

👉 To avoid this problem, the vehicle owner can generate a Driver Authorization Letter online by paying only ₹100.

Who Should Apply for the Authorization Letter?

⚠️ Important Rule:
The vehicle owner must complete the registration and authorization process — not the driver.

  • First-time registration must be done by the registered vehicle owner

  • The driver’s details are added later during authorization
